How our driveway estimate works, from guide price to fixed quote

The first step of our online estimate on a phone: choosing the surface.

The short answer first. You answer three questions about your drive or patio, tell us where to send it, and a guide price arrives in your inbox straight away. It takes about a minute. From there you can book a free site visit, and after that visit you get a fixed price in writing.

It is the first step to a driveway or patio quote from us, and this is how each part of it works: what the questions are, why the first number is a range rather than a single price, and what happens to your details.

The three questions

The estimate tool asks three things, one at a time:

  1. Which surface you want. Block paving, tarmac, Indian stone, porcelain or artificial grass.
  2. How big the area is. You pick a size band rather than typing an exact figure. Each band is described by how many cars would fit, from "1 car or a small patio" up to "7 cars or more", with the square metres beside it. If you are not sure, pick the nearest one; if you are right on a boundary, pick the bigger one.
  3. What is there now. Grass or earth, old block paving, old slabs, old tarmac or old concrete. Taking up the old surface is part of the job, and some come up more easily than others.

On the last screen you can also add edging, drainage or steps, if you know you need them. That part is optional.

Then it asks where to send your guide price, and that is just your name and email. There is a box to tick if you would like us to call you to talk it through, and if you tick it, it asks for your phone number as well. Leave it unticked and we will not ring you about the estimate.

Why it is a range, not a price

The guide price comes as a range, and it is wide on purpose. It runs from the smallest area in the size band you picked to the largest and, for most surfaces, from standard materials to premium ones. Tarmac has a single specification, so there the range comes from the size alone. A top-end product, or an area well over 200 square metres, can cost more again.

What can change the price, up or down, is the part no form can see:

  • the exact measurements
  • whether a digger can get in, because digging by hand costs more
  • what is under the ground
  • levels and drainage
  • manhole covers
  • the product you choose

The guide price already includes digging out and taking it all away, old surface included, the sub-base, the surface itself, laying it, and any edging, drainage or steps you added. It is a guide, not a quotation, and it can change once we have seen the site.

We would rather give you an honest range after a minute of questions than a single number we could not stand behind until we have seen the ground.

From guide price to a fixed price

The email with your guide price has a button to book your free site visit. From there:

  1. You pick a day and time that suits you.
  2. We call you to confirm it.
  3. We come out, measure up and check the ground. It is free, and there is no obligation.
  4. You get a fixed price in writing.

If you would rather talk first, the email has our phone number and our WhatsApp as well. The site visit is also where we bring the catalogue, so you can go through the full range of blocks, stone and porcelain at your own property.

What happens to your details

We use them for your estimate, your visit and your quotation. We will follow up about your estimate, and now and then we also send news and offers about our own work. News and offers only ever come by email. If you would rather not hear from us beyond the estimate itself, choose "No thanks" on the form, and every email has an Unsubscribe link as well. We never pass your details on for anyone else's marketing. The full detail is in our privacy policy.

Where we work

We lay driveways and patios across Barnsley and up to 30 miles around it, including Cudworth, Wombwell, Royston, Darfield and Hoyland, and out to Wakefield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Sheffield and Huddersfield. The estimate tool asks the same three questions wherever you are in that area.

Before you start

It helps to have a rough idea of the size. Length times width in metres is enough, and if you do not have a tape measure handy, count how many cars would fit.

For more on what goes into the price itself, see what a block paving driveway costs in Barnsley. If you are still weighing up materials, we compare block paving and tarmac and Indian sandstone and porcelain side by side.

When you are ready, start your estimate here. It takes about a minute.
